Texas Home Visiting

Texas Home Visiting is a free program that helps good people be great parents.

Parents as Teachers is for any family expecting a child or with children up to kindergarten age (age 5 or 6). Parents as Teachers teaches parents about child development and gives parenting support. The Parents as Teachers helps to ensure that young children are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. The program includes one-on-one home visits, monthly group meetings, developmental testing, and a resource network for families.

0:04

the hopes program has two evidence-based

0:06

models the parents's teachers program

0:08

and the safe CARE program they both help

0:10

support parents with young children meet

0:13

their developmental

0:18

Milestones I found out about the parent

0:20

as Teachers Program through Easter Seals

0:22

through a friend of mine named Christina

0:24

through mops being a stay-at-home mom

0:27

can be isolating sometimes and I really

0:29

love how the parent as teacher would

0:31

come and just be down to earth and

0:33

really help me with any questions and

0:35

sometimes that was more important than

0:37

anything else the hopes program also has

0:41

counseling support groups one of those

0:42

is called mothers and babies it helps

0:44

support expecting moms and new moms in

0:47

their Journey with parenting I love that

0:49

we could encourage each other and just

0:52

share with each other and learn so much

0:54

from the other moms I know children

0:56

spend a lot of time in school and

0:58

families should be the Foundation of

1:00

where they learn from first and foremost

1:03

family is a priority we have for

1:05

children and even you know each child is

1:08

different you learn things with each

1:10

child differently and it's just amazing

1:12

what you guys offer I really love being

1:16

part of parent as teachers for Easter

1:18

Seals I love the community I love the

1:21

home visits that my parent s teacher has

1:24

come to visit me uh I really love that

1:27

she has um created uh a positive

1:31

experience for my children and I she has

1:35

provided uh projects that we can do with

1:38

each other to Foster that relationship

1:41

she has provided um uh testing to for my

1:45

child to see where their progress is and

1:48

uh that way we can build on their

1:50

strengths and weaknesses and she has

1:52

also given me diapers wipies a play pen

1:56

a baby Splash Pad uh and so much more

2:00

the Family Resource Center is another

2:02

way for parents of young children to

2:04

come learn more about what's available

2:05

to them in the community as well as our

2:07

Easter sales programs we host a variety

2:10

of workshops on a monthly basis and we

2:13

offer counseling services to parents and

2:15

have a lactation room that's available

2:17

to the community so nursing mothers can

2:19

come find a quick place to feed their

2:21

babies the FAS family has had an

2:23

opportunity to participate in our

2:25

programs we've got to see the growth um

2:28

and we got to see the children

2:30

developing and moving along um really

2:32

working with them has been an honor and

2:34

privilege and we are happy that they are

2:37

part of our voice and they provide

2:38

feedback uh on all our programs some of

2:41

our workshops topics have come from

2:44

feedback from our parents and our

2:46

community we do go based off of our

2:48

surveys so some of the topics have been

2:50

CPR first aid um English and Spanish uh

2:54

social emotional workshops uh we also

2:57

host virtual as well to accommodate to

3:00

parents parents always say um that

3:03

children don't come with instructions

3:04

but they are thankful for the fact that

3:06

we have uh evidence-based models that

3:08

can support them they just feel

3:10

empowered to be able to um provide for

3:13

their children and be able to be the

3:15

best parents that they can be I think

3:18

everybody who has a family should be

3:21

involved in programs like this there's

3:23

just so many resources that we weren't

3:25

even aware that we learned recently

3:27

about it and it's fun in even in the

3:30

social aspect setting of you know a

3:32

parent learning from another parent and

3:35

just gaining the skills and and just

3:37

learning from a different perspective it

3:39

was just

3:44

[Music]

3:48

great Easter Seals putting children

3:52

first always

0:02

[Music]

0:11

my role with the parents's teachers

0:12

program is to support the child's

0:14

development and overall well-being

0:17

of the whole family

0:19

[Music]

0:21

i started with james and his family when

0:24

he was about two years old so it's been

0:26

about seven months now

0:27

and we started doing virtual visits so

0:30

i've never

0:31

been in the home and that's something

0:33

different this year

0:34

uh you know it looks a little different

0:37

with the family because we're doing it

0:39

on zoom so that's virtual visits and

0:41

we're being very creative

0:43

and getting the family involved the

0:45

whole family involved

0:46

during our our calls i one thing i think

0:50

is that it's very organic it meets you

0:52

where you're where you're at

0:54

and i was very excited because

0:57

we couldn't get help for speech therapy

0:59

for a little boy when i heard about the

1:00

parents as teachers program

1:02

and it was explained to me i thought i

1:03

like this this is something that we can

1:05

do i'm a stay-at-home parent

1:06

and i'm going to embrace this as best as

1:08

possible when i got

1:10

the workbook or the i was overwhelmed

1:13

because i just looked at the size of it

1:14

but when i started

1:15

leafing through it and i started seeing

1:17

how

1:18

how it meets you where it's at i think

1:20

that's the best way is like this is this

1:21

is not necessarily

1:22

the best program we're gonna make this

1:23

the best program for you and your child

1:25

and meet you where you're at what his

1:27

needs are what his strengths are

1:29

not necessarily what his deficiencies

1:30

are but what his areas of opportunity

1:32

are and i have to

1:33

even the verbiage when you see things

1:35

like that that makes you very hopeful

1:37

and that's what i liked about it is that

1:39

it was

1:40

kind of a customizable it would meet you

1:43

where you're at i keep saying that

1:45

because

1:46

that's what it did for our child it

1:47

didn't talk down to him it didn't allow

1:49

us to be

1:50

a secondary teacher it allowed us to

1:53

kind of as a parent where that teacher

1:56

had

1:57

but also walk with them and learn as

2:00

much i would learn i learned just as

2:01

much as james did i feel

2:03

i learned a lot the appearances teachers

2:06

program is

2:06

helpful to all families regardless of

2:09

need but we are here to provide

2:12

support and parenting strategies of

2:14

course we want to make sure that our

2:15

kids are ready to go to school

2:17

and that's our focus in child

2:19

development

2:20

but we you know we're here to serve our

2:23

families

2:24

and our community um and provide the

2:26

support that's needed

2:28

the parents concerns at the beginning

2:30

when we started was

2:31

james's language skills so they were

2:34

concerned maybe he wasn't talking like

2:36

he should at his age so we were meeting

2:39

uh

2:39

setting goals together each week and

2:42

mom and dad were really great about

2:45

messaging me

2:46

texting me telling me new words that he

2:48

was saying each week and

2:50

how they continue the learning with the

2:51

activities that we do

2:53

it has been challenging at times because

2:56

as we know technology doesn't always

2:58

work

2:59

but the family's been very flexible and

3:01

they really like the program they've

3:03

seen

3:04

results and you know their child is on

3:06

the path to

3:08

getting ready for school at the

3:10

beginning

3:11

he wasn't seeing any words and he wasn't

3:13

really comprehending what we were saying

3:16

and so now the comprehension is there

3:19

now

3:19

so there was a point even i think

3:23

uh midway through where i told melissa i

3:26

don't

3:26

feel like i feel like there's something

3:28

wrong and

3:29

i don't feel anymore the family skills

3:31

is definitely

3:32

commitment i think when i think of this

3:35

family i think of that word because

3:37

they're really committed

3:38

to teaching their child and become their

3:41

first teacher one of the things like i

3:43

said before is language

3:45

he is his vocabulary is growing so much

3:48

and he's now saying two to three words

3:51

in a sentence and he's approaching his

3:53

third birthday so the parents are really

3:54

excited

3:55

a lot of back and forth communication

3:59

requesting things that he never was able

4:02

to say before he was just

4:03

pointing and using gestures now he's

4:06

actually using words and it's the

4:07

parents are super excited to see

4:09

that growth through the program but it's

4:12

a huge difference in just a short amount

4:14

of time that we've been doing this

4:15

i mean he says his letters his colors

4:18

um directions like he you can understand

4:22

oh he can understand us now he's

4:23

teaching us as well

4:25

he's making us better communicators and

4:28

more effective as parents with each

4:29

other because then we can communicate

4:31

say

4:32

this is something he accomplished today

4:33

today he did this and let me explain to

4:35

you she gets home from work and i

4:36

explain to her

4:37

and she'll tell me oh my god you're not

4:39

going to guess what he did i caught it

4:40

on video and

4:41

and we'll share those moments with each

4:43

other and did he learn that from you

4:44

know

4:45

but that was in the program remember we

4:46

talked about the blanket or

4:48

some activity that that helps him kind

4:50

of jumpstart him and his communication

4:52

so

4:53

it's been really fun in that sense that

4:56

we're just very comfortable with that

4:57

and we're letting him grow at his own

4:59

pace

4:59

you also see how it's also benefiting

5:01

our 12 year old as well yeah

5:03

in a very you would think indirect but

5:05

no it's in a very direct tangible way

5:07

because then you see

5:08

him try some of these techniques with us

5:10

like hey i was thinking we could do this

5:13

and he's already leading

5:14

off he's not suggesting he's he's kind

5:17

of taking action

5:17

and helping us do something as simple as

5:20

just go outside with him and ride the

5:21

bike

5:22

i've seen a lot of growth with james and

5:24

i continue to see

5:26

changes um every week that i meet with

5:28

them

5:29

either through phone calls text messages

5:33

i see him communicating more of getting

5:36

along with his sibling

5:38

uh having a stronger parent and child

5:41

relationship

5:42

that's the most important thing because

5:44

i think

5:45

at the beginning they struggled a little

5:46

bit of how to just get down and play

5:49

with their child and follow his

5:50

interests interest

5:51

and just kind of playing and having fun

5:53

with their child and

5:54

not put so much pressure on you know the

5:57

learning letters and numbers you know

5:59

that's going to come later

6:01

and he is already showing interest in

6:03

letters actually mom

6:04

you know sent me a video of him um you

6:07

know repeating some of those letters and

6:09

imitating so

6:10

i i see big growth and for his future

6:13

and he'll be ready to start school

6:15

i i'm very comfortable where he's at um

6:18

i don't have that fear anymore that he's

6:21

behind

6:22

uh he's to me he's on track and he's

6:25

doing exactly what he's supposed to be

6:26

doing

6:27

i'm ready to see him interact with other

6:29

kids going to places to go play

6:32

or even the home visits with melissa you

6:34

know to be able to i mean she's really

6:35

good with kids

6:36

to see her be able to come in and

6:39

actually sit down with him

6:41

and um have a visit that way would be

6:43

great

6:44

you can see that he's looking forward to

6:45

more as we give him

6:47

more activities makes us very proud of

6:49

him that for the first year and a half

6:51

of his life

6:52

he hasn't had all that interaction yet

6:54

he's still doing really well because of

6:56

the program

6:56

because of the support that we're

6:58

getting from alyssa so helps us a lot

7:01

it just makes us hopeful

7:20

you

[Music]

0:15

the focus of the Hippy program is to

0:17

encourage parents to prepare their

0:18

children for school we provide them with

0:20

books and a curriculum that will help

0:22

their children once they reach school to

0:25

know their letters and their numbers and

0:27

their shapes and be prepared it also

0:29

gives experience the confidence to be

0:31

engaged in their children's

0:33

education my family is five five members

0:37

of my family myself my husband and my

0:39

three kids when we were at the library

0:41

one day we saw a hippie table and I just

0:43

walked up asked questions and I like the

0:45

information then I called and enrolled

0:47

we work with families during home visits

0:50

we provide activities that the whole

0:52

family can participate in we also help

0:54

with parenting support strategies and

0:57

overall family well-being we really want

0:59

to encourage engage healthy and safe

1:01

homes for children to learn and grow oh

1:03

my home visitor she's amazing I've been

1:05

with her for 2 years she brings

1:07

activities and books and we role play

1:09

the activities and then I learn how to

1:11

do them with my son and I do them with

1:14

my son throughout the week we are a no

1:17

cost program to families so they never

1:19

have to pay for our services um and we

1:21

serve families prenatal up until their

1:23

children start

1:25

school before I started with hippie I

1:27

did have uh some concerns about my son's

1:30

speech delay but hippie put me at ease

1:32

with those concerns they offered

1:35

assessments and not to diagnose but it

1:37

just gauges where your kid is at so it

1:40

did put me at ease and I he's learned a

1:43

lot from cutting to coloring but also

1:46

spelling his name and trying to write it

1:48

on his own it's really nice to see like

1:50

she said her first concern was Speech

1:53

but she he's developed greatly and she

1:56

can see that she didn't have to worry

1:59

after all

2:00

hippie Easter Seals is awesome they

2:02

offer not just activities for your kids

2:04

but they also have events for moms they

2:07

do even Cafe for the parents and if your

2:10

family's also in need they offer food

2:12

pantry they have so many events so many

2:15

resources for the families one of the

2:17

big successes that we have had has been

2:20

connecting our families to the Family

2:21

Resource Center and with the Family

2:23

Resource Center we've also been able to

2:24

connect them to counseling services

2:26

which has been a major support children

2:29

who complete the hippy program go to

2:31

school ready to learn they know their

2:32

letters they know their numbers they

2:34

know their shapes they know how to sit

2:37

for activities and be prepared and

2:39

parents complete the program being more

2:41

confident more engaged in their

2:43

children's learning knowing how

2:44

important it is to spend time with their

2:46

children and really focus one on-one with

2:48

them it's been two years working with

2:50

this family she's a great mom she loves

2:54

the curriculum um and she implements it

2:56

in her everyday life she not just works

2:59

with her child but she includes the

3:01

other two children too so it's really

3:03

nice to see all the skills Manuel is

3:06

learning I would tell other parents that

3:10

this is a free program that we offer

3:12

it's a School Readiness program it's

3:15

they get to be their child's uh first

3:17

teacher and they can just use this as a

3:20

resource we'll bring all the supplies

3:23

we'll give the curriculum and it it'll

3:26

be a fun activities that we do with the

3:28

family I do feel that my son has the

3:31

skills to start school he's now four but

3:34

he's I I believe hippie Easter Seals has

3:36

prepared him good for that and I just

3:38

want to say thank you for coming into my

3:40

life and helping my child get ready for

3:42

school hippie EAS seals has been great

3:44

for us

3:48
